Trail guides written by the people who walk them every week.

Numbers are useful, but they only tell half a story. These short guides combine the official stats with the things you only learn after the tenth visit — where the wind funnels, when the path stays muddy, and which café opens early.

How to read our route grading

Every guide carries the same four-line summary so you can compare options quickly. We grade routes from gentle to demanding based on three honest measures.

  • Distance — total kilometres including the return leg, where applicable.
  • Elevation — total metres of climb across the route, not just the highest point.
  • Exposure — how sheltered the route stays in a strong southerly.
  • Surface — the proportion of sealed path, gravel and natural trail.

Three Wellington favourites for this season

Oriental Bay Promenade

3.8 km · flat · low exposure

Sealed waterfront path, ideal for early mornings, prams and warm-up walks. Pairs nicely with breakfast at Freyberg Beach.

Mount Victoria Loop

5.6 km · 220 m climb · medium exposure

Mixed forest and ridge path with rewarding harbour views. Best in still mornings before the city wakes up.

Red Rocks Coastal Walk

9.2 km · gentle gradient · high exposure

Open south-coast route past dramatic rock formations. Check the wind forecast — it changes the day completely.

Weather windows

The best time of day for each kind of route

Coastal flats

Aim for first light. Calmer winds, soft sun and the path almost to yourself.

Forest loops

Mid-morning is ideal — the canopy lifts the chill but keeps the heat manageable.

Ridge walks

Late morning, after the cloud lifts. Always carry a shell, even on a clear day.

Sheltered paddles

Early afternoon when the harbour breeze is gentle and the light is warm.
